Facts
- The No. 1 player from Belarus had a successful first
five months of season in 2003, highlighted by his first
career ATP title in Rotterdam. In February, posted wins
over Ancis, Ljubicic, Kafelnikov, Federer and Sluiter in
Rotterdam to become first Belarussian to win an ATP Title.
- His best clay result was semi-final in Estoril. He won
doubles titles at TMS Miami (with Federer), Estoril and
TMS Monte Carlo (with Bhupathi), while reaching three other
finals with as many partners.
- In 2002, he finished a career best No.3 in doubles, winning
three titles in a career-high 10 finals, highlighted by
his second US Open crown.
- In doubles, he won titles in Rotterdam and Moscow with
Federer, US Open with Bhupathi and reached seven other finals
with three partners.
- In May, reached semi-final at TMS Hamburg with impressive
wins over Sampras, Moya, zabaleta and Boutler before losing
to eventual Federer.
- He turned in his best Grand Slam effort at US Open where
he reached his first quarter final, defeated Federer in
4th round before losing a close battle to Agassi.
- In 2001, he compiled his best season as he finished in
Top 40 in singles and advanced to his first ATP singles
final .
- In April, he defeated B.Black and Ullyett in 1st round
Davis Cup tie to lead his country to a victory.
- He beat four former Grand Slam champions at TMS Stuttgart
en route to first his career final. He defeated Rochus,
Ivansievic, Sampras and Kafelnikov before losing to favourite
Haas.
- In 2000, he is the first Belarussian to finish Top 50
singles.He captured his first Grand Slam men’s doubles
title at US Open, defeating E.Ferreira-Leach in final.
- At his first Olympic in Sydney, he defeated doubles partner
Hewitt in 1st round and lost to silver medallist Haas in
quarter-final.
- In 1999, he reached his first ATP singles semi-final in
Orlando, defeating Courier en route. In double, he won four
titles with three different partners.
- In 1997, he won first career tour doubles title in Shangahi
with Ullyett.
Awards
- In 2002, named UN AIDS Ambassador for Belarus.
- In 2001, he received highest State Honorary Title for
his achievements in sports
Personal
- His nickname is “The Beast” for his size and
ability to fight on court.
- He began playing tennis at age six with his father Nikolai,
received training at Nick Bollettier Tennis Academy. Considered
service as best part of his game.
- He did not play much junior tennis with his best result
quarter-final in Orange Bowl in 1994.
- A devoted advocate of yoga and he uses it prior to every
match
