Facts
- In 2003, the Dutchman won two singles titles in Hilversum
and Milan; reached final at Lubeck and Roland Garros; reached
semi-final at St Poelten: entered 4th round at Rome TMS.
He paired with Sluiter to reach final and semi-final at
Delray Beach and ‘s-Hertogenbosch respectively: also
reached semi-final with Costa at Madrid.
- He won a career-best seven ATP matches, while amassing
34 wins and two titles on Challenger Circuit in 2002. He
reached first ATP quarter-final in Indianapolis. Began year
by reaching finals at Waikoloa and Dallas Challengers. He
won only Challenger title of year at Turin. Achieved first
ATP quarter-final in Indianapolis by defeating Ljubicic
and Popp and received quarter-spot after getting walkover
from Henman in 3rd round, lost eventual champion Rusedski
in quarter-final match.
- In 2001, he played only ATP event of year in Amsterdam,
losing to O. Mutis in 1st round; reached finals at Challengers
in Eisenach and Aschaffenburg; reached semi-final in Braunschweig
and Houston Challengers.
- In 2000, he reached semi-final at Scheveningen and Manerbio
Challengers. Only win of year came at USA F23, while reaching
semi-final three times and quarter-final twice at Futures
level.
- In 1999, he reached final of Scheveningen Challenger and
improved ranking nearly 200 points during year.
- He defeated fellow Dutch player John van Lottum to reach
2nd round in first ATP event at Amsterdam before losing
to S.Dosedel in next match in 1998.
- In 1997, he finished as runner-up at Netherlands Satellite
after accumulating 46 points. He reached 2nd round at Ostend
Challenger.
- He participated in three Satellites and began to turn
into professional player in 1996.
Personal
- Began playing tennis at age seven with his father, Wim
and mother, Bep, who is a retired school teacher.
- Captured Dutch 18-under title in 1995
- Enjoys watching Formula 1 racing
- Admired Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras
- Considers backhand and serve as his strengths. Favourite
surface is clay and slow hard courts
- Says playing Andy Roddick in 1st round of 2002 US Open
on Arthur Ashe Stadium is his biggest tennis memory.
- Coached by Nick Carr (of New Zealand) since October 2001.
